What to Do When You Are Locked Out of Your Car
Stay calm, check the simple things first, and know when to call a professional.
Being locked out of your car is stressful, but a few calm steps can save you time and damage.
1. Check every door and the trunk. It is easy to miss that one door is unlocked, especially if you have several passengers.
2. Do not force the window or door. Modern cars have wiring, airbag sensors, and tight seals inside the door. Coat hangers and wedges can scratch the paint, bend the frame, or damage electronics.
3. Look for a spare. If someone can bring you a spare key or fob, that is usually the quickest fix.
4. If a child or pet is inside, act fast. In hot or cold weather, call 911 first.
5. Call a mobile locksmith. A professional can open most vehicles without damage and can often cut and program a new key on the spot if yours is lost.
